Min’yo channel 1010: OISE MAIRI
-Japanese folk song (music genre: Ko Uta)
-Shamisen = honchoshi on D
-Kouta, which literally means “little” or “short” song, is one type of the many varieties of Japanese folk songs that is distinguished by its briefness and wittiness
-It developed near the end of the Edo period, and derived from an earlier form of folk music called “hauta”, which is from earlier in the Edo period
-During the rule of Japan by the Edo shogunate from the 17th to 19th centuries, pilgrimages to this shrine from all over the country — known as “O-ise-mairi” — were popular among almost most commoners
-Hundreds of people would travel to Ise Shrine for dozens of days —At that time, movements of people were strictly controlled and it was hard to make a pilgrimage, so the trip to Ise Shrine was a dream of a lifetime for many people
-The 1st lyrics is base on the true story
-During the Kyoho era (1716-1736), two lovers committed suicide at the Katsura River in Kyoto, and the incident became famous because of the difference in age between the middle-aged man, Choemon, and the teenaged girl, Ohan
-The story became the subject of a number of Kabuki and Joruri plays (the latter are puppet plays with narrative chanting accompanied by the shamisen)
