The Man’yōshū is categorized into miscellaneous poems, elegies, and short poems similar to love letters. These so to speak love letters consist of both the original verses and replies to those verses. I was drawn into the serene, free world of the Man’yōshū and decided that someday I would like to express these sentiments in my own way. It was from this idea this work for koto and voice was born. The lyrics are adopted from a poem that appears at the beginning of the Man’yōshū, and is an exchange between Prince Otsu and Ishikawa no Iratsume. The young Prince Otsu, who has a promising future ahead of him in literary and military arts, falls in love with Ishikawa no Iratsume, who serves his rival, elder brother Prince Kusakabe. However, the affair ends tragically for the young Prince Otsu, as he gets caught up in a fight for succession to the Imperial throne. Reaching for this sense of ephemerality, the song has a simple, carefree melody similar to a vocal sub-genre of gagaku (Imperial court music) called roei. I hope that this piece provides a way to deliver sentiments found in the Man’yōshū to the present. It was composed and premiered in 2011.
