Chopin incorporated the Polish Christmas carol ‘Sleep, Infant Jesus’ into the middle section of Scherzo No. 1. This is a lullaby of the Virgin Mary. She knows that the infant Jesus in her arms will die for the sins of the people. Her sorrow is expressed by Chopin as a beautiful and sad song.
