"The Fall - o exercicio da queda" stems from a highly personal premise and is based on a participatory and collaborative event. Considering the literal and performative potential of such concept, but also the symbolic and metaphorical connotations associated with it, a wide range of participants was invited to interact with the artist in a scenic space (a theatre stage).

Embracing issues of otherness (both in its external and internal dimensions) the piece explores levels of truth, staging, performativity and (self-)representation. What does it mean to be on a stage? The final outcome is a quiet, intimate and yet powerful video-essay that incorporates words and gestures, consequences of one single request: to fall.

The Fall

Jose Carlos Teixeira
Jose Carlos Teixeira (1977) is a Portuguese artist whose work primarily involves video-essay, and installation. Using strategies of participation and performance, he expands on notions of identity, otherness, language, boundary, exile and displacement. A 2008/09 fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, in Film-Video-New Media, Teixeira completed an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio at the University of California Los Angeles (USA), and holds a Bachelor's degree from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Porto (Portugal). Teixeira was until recently Assistant Professor at ESAD (Portugal), and works currently as a Lecturer at UW-Madison Art Department (USA). He has been involved in several projects, exhibitions and screenings both in Europe and in North America, as well as in Singapore, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, and Cape Verde.

His work has been shown in venues such as the Hammer Museum, LACE, and Armory Center for the Arts (Los Angeles), Art Interactive (Boston), Museum of the City of New York (New York), Le Grand Halle de La Villete (Paris), Wurttembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart), Rosalux, Berlinerpool (Berlin), National Center for Contemporary Arts (Moscow), M. K. Ciurlionis National Museum (Kaunas), Helio Oiticica Art Center (Rio de Janeiro), Sao Paulo Cultural Center (S. Paulo), Museu FBAUP, Museu Soares dos Reis (Porto), Museu da Cidade, Fundacao EDP, Fundacao Carmona e Costa, Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, Goethe-Institut, and Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa (Lisbon), to name a few. He is represented in the Aberdeen Art Gallery Collection (UK), EDP Foundation, and PLMJ Foundation (Portugal), and was nominated for the 2005 EDP New Artists Prize, in addition to being recipient of several grants and awards (Fulbright/Carmona e Costa Foundation Grant, Gulbenkian Foundation/FLAD Grant, UCLA Fellowships, Samuel Booth Award, D'Arcy Hayman Award, and FUSO Video Festival Jury Award 2011, among others).
