 <The War> Etchings Set 1924 - Otto Dix

展览:铜版画《战争》系列1924-奥托·迪克斯

"I will either be famous or infamous", Otto Dix once said as a young man; Now, he is considered both. From November 20th to December 20th 2012, the Goethe-Institut China will present the exhibition "Otto Dix. Social Criticism 1920-1924 'The War' 1924" of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) in cooperation with the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts. Eighty-six etchings and lithographs by Otto Dix will be on display. In addition, there will be a supporting program consisting of lectures, a workshop and a film screening about Dix's life and work. Besides Nanjing, the touring exhibition will be shown in Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Beijing.

"The War", a series of etchings widely regarded as exceptional among even the main works of Dix's oeuvre, forms the center of attention of this exhibition. The direct confrontation with war at the front lines as a machine-gunner was so unsettling for Otto Dix that this experience marked him for life, influencing his entire life's work. More than 600 drawings alone were done between 1914 and 1918 at various theaters of war in Belgium, France and Russia.

These protocols of war, created on the spot and of high artistic value, together with his own memories of the horrors of World War I, formed the basis of a grandiose serial work entitled "The War", published in 1924 by Karl Nierendorf in Berlin. The cycle, consisting of fifty separate drawings and often compared to Goya's "Desastres de la Guerra", not only gives an authentic and horrifying portrayal of the terrible trench fighting that took place in the great battles of this first World War - it also unmasks the moloch of war for what it truly is.

Born as a son to a worker's family in Gera in 1891, Dix first served an apprenticeship with decorative painter Carl Senff. In 1910, he entered the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden (Academy of Applied Arts) with a scholarship awarded by the Prince of Reub. During World War I, he volunteered for military service and served in the field artillery and as machine-gunner in France and Russia. The direct confrontation with war at the front lines became a basic element in his paintings. As one of the exceptional painters and graphic artists of the 20th century, he left behind more than 6000 paintings and drawings.
