故事横跨四十多年，历经一战和二战。男主角是出身英国贵族的战斗英雄。他听说有个不负责任的记者在德国撰写侮辱英军的文章，便只身前往德国，因而邂逅了爱迪丝。出于英国人的含蓄矜持并未表白爱意，返英后才意识这位偶然邂逅的佳人是自己的真爱，从此苦苦寻觅与之相似的影子。名列《Timeout》英国影史百大第十四名，2011年焦点导演麦可鲍威尔的作品数位修复。
