Currently under renovation until Spring 2013, the Musée National Picasso, Paris is travelling its collections around the world, to the delight of fans of the master of modern painting. After two successful steps in Taipei and Shanghai, Hong Kong is the next destination for these 55 works (48 paintings and 7 sculptures) of the artist, which is the most important Picasso exhibition ever presented at the “fragant harbour”. Stretching from the late 19th century to his death in 1973, from this selection you can find the works that represent different periods of the artist’s creative life: Blue Period, Rose Period, Neoclassicism, Cubism, etc. It lets us to appreciate the diversity of styles and the incredible creativity that characterizes this extraordinary artist.
Devoted to the work of just one artist, the Picasso Museeum was set up in 1985 to display the collection of works acquired by the French government from the artist’s heirs in 1979. As a result of gifts and twenty years of active acquisition policy, the museum is today blessed with an exceptional collection of over 5,000 masterpieces and works by Picasso. Playing key roles in the creative dynamics of the artist, they form the most complete public collection of Picasso’s works ever assembled.
Pablo Picasso spent most of his life in France, where he co-founded with Georges Braque the Cubist Movement. Widely celebrated, Picasso is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. He was described by all his contemporaries as a genius who has contributed to the major changes in the art history. During the first decade of the 20th century, he experimented with different theories, techniques and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments won him universal renown, making him the best-known and the most expensive artist of the century. His painting Nude, Green Leaves and Bust (Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur, 1932), has set a world art auction record at US$106.5 million in May 2010.
