Photography Collecting

The international thematic symposium of Caochangdi PhotoSpring is an annual event that aims to explore the role and value of photography in art history. It is one of the highlights of the second edition of the Caochangdi PhotoSpring. This year, the symposium is dedicated to collecting.

The acquisition of photography in public and private collections has over a century of history in Western culture. Currently art collecting as a whole is bourgeoning in China, but photography collecting remains a relatively new practice.

The symposium, owing to the participation of eminent collectors from the public and private sectors of various countries, will fuel a lively and fruitful dialogue on the current state of photography collecting practices. It will shed light upon photography acquisition policies of museums, corporations and private collections in the hopes of providing educational insight for emerging collectors and individuals seeking out new channels of investment. Additionally, it aims to promote the art of photography to a broader pubic in contemporary China.
