Rough generalisation divides Chinese design into two eras: the time of exquisite ceramics meant to serve the imperial court, and the Made in China era of cheap production. The Artifact beyond exhibition expands this narrow idea by introducing a group of young Chinese designers and artisans.
The objects showcased in the exhibition honour, in many ways, the ancient traditions, while also incorporating aspects of a modern day dynamic China. Artifacts displayed include an acrylic table, a chair whose design resembles the art of folding paper, a bicycle with a bamboo frame and an elegant home air purifier.
