The Secret Songs of Women - Helsinki Festival 2015

China is home to nüshu, an ancient, secret language known only to women. Over the years, women, young and old alike, have used it to express their supressed emotions, through song. Chinese composer Tan Dun discovered women in his native region who still retain a knowledge of this fast vanishing language. Tan Dun set about recording nüshu songs, later composing a harp concerto to complement them. At the Helsinki concert, short films based on these genuine vocal recordings, accompanied by an orchestra led by Tan Dun himself, are at the very heart of the performance.
