Inspired by Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness, Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now has only grown in acclaim since its 1979 release. In 2001, Coppola re-edited the film and added 49 minutes of footage, resulting in Apocalypse Now Redux, a monumental 202-minute cut that raised Coppola's already stunning work to even greater heights. Premiering at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, Apocalypse Now Redux follows U.S. Army Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) as he travels deep into the jungles of Vietnam in search of the rogue Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando). What starts as a search for a soldier metamorphoses into an elegiac examination of the amorality and madness inherent in war and man.
