Lacombe, Lucien

The recent Nobel Prize in literature awarded to Patrick Modiano in recognition of his complex studies of actions and emotions, especially of "collaborators" in wartime France, force us to reevaluate a film often seen in terms of its director Louis Malle and his memories of war time as well as the silences in France that the film confronted. A simple story of a French peasant boy who chooses unknowingly but wrongly between the Nazis and the Resistance, and then falls in love with a French-Jewish girl trying to protect her grandfather in a world of discrimination and death. A morality tale whose ramifications go far beyond a world at war, in the moral choices we all face.
