Love remembered. Returning to his boyhood, with loving cinematography by Nestor Almendros, Eustache reimagines his move from a small traditional village where he lived with his grandmother, to a larger, provincial city where he faced challenges with his mother and her lover and learned the ways of the world on the streets rather than in farms and schools. A coming-of-age story so different from Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959), for example, that it forces us to rethink the complexity of France as transformed by 1968 and the French New Wave.
