The Mirror

Tarkovsky pushed the boundaries of cinematic narrative in The Mirror, a sublime, dream-like film interweaving personal history, newsreel footage, as well as poetry readings by his father, the poet Arseny Tarkovsky. Relinquishing linear storytelling, the film favors alternating and linking scenes by the weight of dreams, memories and impressions. The film draws upon the personal and the national in its portrayal of Aleksei, Tarkovsky's onscreen alter ego, and his family - especially his mother Maria, and his ex-wife, Natalya (both played by Margarita Terekhova). Gliding between childhood, adolescence, and adulthood - three periods that correspond to the pre-war, wartime, and post-war eras of Soviet history - The Mirror forms a space where, as it suggests, one could "summon a century at will".
