Song Without Words Still

According to director Lo Wei, the concept for this film started during a dinner conversation. When Lo and writer Chang Cheh encountered Lucilla You Min at a restaurant, Lo mentioned that the only problem with the talented screen beauty is her lackluster Mandarin skills, which led to the filmmaker's idea of having You play a mute in this tragic melodrama. The actress stars as Ling, a mute orphan who is watched over by her loving boyfriend Cheung (Kelly Lai Chen), despite Cheung's parents objecting to the relationship.

When Cheung is sent to study in the city, tragedy strikes as Ling is assaulted by Cheung's uncle (Lo Wei). Many aspects of the film may appear slightly oldfashioned to modern audiences, but the spotlight of the film should be on You. Relying entirely on her physical movements to express her character's emotional roller coaster, the actress definitely lives up to Lo's expectations in this award-caliber performance.
