We Are the Best!

We Are the Best!

From the Desk of Mr. Lady: tales of riot grrls, punk girls, girls who want to be punks but don't know where to start, girls who are DIY-ed in the wool punks but are trying not to be, girls who want to tell stories about other girls who are punks, rebel girls, trouble girls, girls who know exactly what they're doing…get off the internet and get your ass to Dada.

Two in the No Wave: two short(er) films from female No Wave filmmakers working in the US in the early 1980s.

Guerillère Talks (Dir. Vivian Dick, 1978). The Queen on No Wave cinema cuts her teeth for the coming avant-garde (No) Tsunami. A formless formalist punk poem starring Pat Place and Adele Bertei of The Contortions and the incomparable Lydia Lunch, the Lower East Side legend who makes Courtney Love look like a cheap punk Barbie.

Debt Begins at 20, (Dir. Stephanie Beroes, 1980). Beroes composes a hilarious, touching, and evocative douc-drama documenting the Pittsburgh punk and post-punk scene of 1980. I've never seen any movie that so beautifully evokes the experience of living in a scene-a moment in time characterized by familiar and evolving tropes, sounds, and the archetypes who become beloved friends. There is no limit to my admiration for this little slice of life masterwork, but I'll emphasize that the soundtrack is outrageously good.

Monday, January 12th
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains (dir. Lou Adler, 1982). Campy punk satire starring a teenage Diane Lane! Need I say more? Probably not, but I will: Diane Lane and Laura Dern (along with a less famous actress) start a punk band that inexplicably skyrockets to fame to dramatic effect. Co-starring Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Paul Simenon of the Clash, The Fabulous Stains was virtually ignored when first released, but has since become celebrated as proto-Riot Grrl bastion of early-80s indie cinema.

Monday, January 19th
The Punk Singer (dir. Sini Anderson, 2013). Here is some information about Kathleen Hanna: She is the driving force behind seminal punk/electronic projects Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin; she invented the Riot Grrl movement and is heavily quoted in this press release; she is married to Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz; she is an unapologetic feminist unimpressed by our Current Moment of Irritating Taylor Swiftian Ambiguity; she coined the title of the famous song of the past thirty years of rock music (Seriously.); she is a fucking hero for all man and womankind. See this documentary. Be inspired. And then stick around to rock the fuck out at a Le Tigre dance party.

Monday, January 26th
We Are the Best! (dir. Lukas Moodysson, 2014). If you're into charming Swedish punks navigating the treacherous waters of efficient socialism and pre-teen angst (and who isn't?) or just enjoying saying "Moodysson" with a Swedish accent (and who doesn't?), check out We are the Best! Moodysson (Lilja 4-ever)'s tenderhearted coming-of-age story is sweetly funny and captures with startling detail and poignancy the experience of being a thirteen-year-old punk girl in Stockholm in 1982. (I imagine.) Featuring a pretty rad soundtrack that serves as a nice intro to early-80s Swedish punk for those inclined.
