The "2. Festival of German Cinema" in China is hosted by German Films and the Goethe-Institut China and will take place from November 14 to 29 in Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Hangzhou. As part of the festival, German director Doris Dörrie's most important works will be presented in aretrospective to a wide Chinese public.

Doris Dörrie was born in Hanover in 1955 and for over 20 years has regularly directed successful films that time and again enjoy enthusiastic reviews and great resonance with audiences. She studied acting, philosophy and psychology in the USA from 1973 until 1975. Back in Germany, she began a course of study at the Munich University of Television and Film (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen). Her thesis film, THE FIRST WALTZ (DER ERSTE WALZER) ran successfully at film festivals in Hof and Lübeck. She then wrote film reviews for The Süddeutsche Zeitung and other print media, and made several documentary films and a children's film for the Bayerischer Rundfunk STRAIGHT THROUGH THE HEART (MITTEN INS HERZ), her first feature film, was released in 1983 and ran at the Venice Film Festival and in Tokyo. Her third film, MEN (MÄNNER), was an international success. At this time she also began writing, and her debut novel, WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? (WAS MACHEN WIR JETZT?) ranked on bestseller lists for months. In addition, Doris Dörrie is a successful opera director and has made a name for herself as a children's book author. She is also a professor of screenwriting at the HFF Munich. In addition to numerous awards for her work as an author and filmmaker, for her films NOBODY LOVES ME (KEINER LIEBT MICH), ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED (ERLEUCHTUNG GARANIERT) and others, she was distinguished with the German Federal Cross of Merit for her social engagement.

Traumatized, she flees to Berlin and works there as a prostitute. She gets to know homeless punk Kalle on the streets. The two of them fall in love, hesitantly at first, and then start to build up a small life for themselves. One day one of Irina's customers (OLIVER NÄGELE) collapses and dies in their apartment. Irina panics and runs away. Kalle comes home and discovers the corpse - and decides to save his happiness with Irina.

Trudi is the only one who knows that her husband is terminally ill with cancer. When his doctor suggests that the couple undertake one last trip together, Trudi persuades her husband to accompany her to visit her children and grandchildren in Berlin. However, the members of their family are far too wrapped up in their own lives to be able to take care of the couple. After a theatre trip to see a Butoh dance performance, Trudi and Rudi decide to go and stay at a hotel on the Baltic coast. And then, out of the blue, Trudi dies. Rudi is completely at a loss. He has no idea what to do with his life, until he decides to go to Japan to visit their youngest son, Karl.
