 Chapter 2

Following the success of New Figuration: Chapter 1 in 2013, Hadrien de Montferrand Gallery is pleased to present New Figuration: Chapter 2, featuring 6 young Chinese artists.

Having all graduated from different Fine Arts Academies in China, they question their personal feelings using different approaches. Thus loneliness and anxiety are recurring topics in many of the works.

Pan Yingguo, Song Mingxiao, Tian Zhe, Wang Min, Zhang Jun, Zhu Rixin all belong to a new generation of artists that grew up in a new era, far away from the political concerns of their eldest, and who developed a more personal vision of their environment.

 Chapter 2

About the Artists
Pan Yingguo (1985) graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing. With his hyperrealist series Sorrow and Joy, he wants to represent an aesthetic form of sadness. He wishes to emphasize the anxiety of his generation and the shape of his own personal development.

Song Mingxiao (1987) graduated from the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting in Beijing. Famous professors including Yang Feiyun taught her. With Sense of Presence series the viewer can see a calm still life. The artist displays only few elements and avoids saturating the canvas. In reality, Song Mingxiao focuses on her inner feelings and wants to emphasize loneliness and depression.

Tian Zhe (1982) graduated from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. He concentrates on the human body, which to him represents the mind's fluctuations and life's different stages. He combines watercolor and simple shapes to create subtle figures and offers his own perception of the body.

Wang Min (1975) graduated from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and HFBK Hamburg in Germany. She uses routine objects to describe our lives. In her recent series, she depicts Beijing's infamous traffic jams to create a metaphor: we are all stuck on one road in this world. A helpless situation lurks under a seemingly harmless artistic depiction.

Zhang Jun (1971) graduated from the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. He produces large oil on canvas depicting dense crowds of people. The faceless persons reflect the loss of identity in China where the individual is lost in the masses.

Zhu Rixin (1986) graduated from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He has focused for the last few years on landscape and its different layers: natural landscape, cultural landscape and historical landscape. Through the representation of maps, he questions the relation between human being and universe and the boarder between science, art and politics.
