 The Demon Barber of Fleet

For the month of November 2014, guest Movie Monday curator Maya Rudolph partners up with Rager Pie for a series of Pi(e)-themed screenings. There will be pie by the slice available at all screenings, with possible thematic pies being made.

November 3: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007, dir. Tim Burton)
"The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett." Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and their period-inappropriate hair make pies from human flesh in this twisted Tim Burton adaptation of the already twisted Broadway musical.

American Pie

November 10: American Pie (1999, dir. Paul Weitz)
"Four teenage boys enter a pact to lose their virginity by prom night." Simple as that. A pie gets laid too. Kind of re-defined the trashy American bildungsroman teensploitation genre, for better or worse. Starring Tara Reid (all other cast members irrelevant).

Pi

November 17: Pi (1998, dir. Darren Aronofsky)
"Max is a genius mathematician who's built a supercomputer at home that provides something that can be understood as a key for understanding all existence. Representatives both from a Hasidic cabalistic sect and high-powered Wall Street firm hear of that secret and attempt to seduce him." A black-and-white mindfucker from Darren Aronofsky, before he bolded his name with Requiem for a Dream and subsequently drew big questions marks around it with that movie where Wolverine did yoga on an asteroid.

Stand by Me

November 24: Stand by Me (1986, Rob Reiner)
"It's the summer of 1959 in Castlerock, Oregon and four 12 year-old boys - Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern - are fast friends. After learning of the general location of the body of a local boy who has been missing for several days, they set off into woods to see it. Along the way, they learn about themselves, the meaning of friendship
and the need to stand up for what is right." A stone cold classic of the "grown narrator recounting the foibles of his white male middle class 1950s American upbringing" genre. Remember that disgusting pie-eating contest scene?
