The New Emperors - Book talk with Kerry Brown
Wednesday, October 15th AT 7:30PM - 40 RMB (Members), 50 RMB (Non-members)
China has become the powerhouse of the world economy and home to 1 in 5 of the world's population, yet we know almost nothing of the people who lead it. How does one become the leader of the world's newest superpower? And who holds the real power in the Chinese system? In The New Emperors, the noted China expert Kerry Brown journeys deep into the heart of the secretive Communist Party. China's system might have its roots in peasant rebellion but it is now firmly under the control of a power-conscious Beijing elite, almost half of whose members are related directly to former senior Party leaders. Brown reveals the intrigue and scandal surrounding the internal battle raging between two China's: one founded by Mao on Communist principles, and a modern China in which 'to get rich is glorious'. At the centre of it all sits the latest Party Secretary, Xi Jinping - the son of a revolutionary, with links both to big business and to the People's Liberation Army. His rise to power is symbolic of the new emperors leading the world's next superpower.

The Thoughts of Chairmen Now - Book talk with Jonathan Geldart  (co-author of the book)

After 30 years of unprecedented economic expansion, the 'Chinese Dream' is to now blend more evenly paced growth with widely shared prosperity, domestic harmony and global stature. What does this 'national rejuvenation' mean for companies doing business in China? With so many questions to ask who better to ask them of than the leaders of Chinese business? With 14 conversations, supported by a condensed history of China, insights on culture, brands and management, the authors take you into candid meetings as business leaders share their insights. The book delves into the changing world of Chinese business leaders, the strategies and tactics they employ and the prerequisites and subtleties required for sustained business success. You'll learn not only what Chinese business leaders think, but how they think and why truly understanding business in China requires viewing it through the prism of Chinese history and culture. The Thoughts of Chairmen Now is essential reading for anyone planning to enter China or currently doing business there. It's also beneficial for Chinese executives, analysts, journalists, academics and anyone else interested in the unfiltered thinking of Chinese business leaders.

Sex and The Citadel- Book talk with Shereen El Feki
THURSDAY, October 30th AT 7:30PM - 40 RMB (Members), 50 RMB (Non-members)
As political change sweeps the streets and squares, parliaments and presidential palaces of the Arab world, Shereen El Feki has been looking at upheaval a little closer to home - in the sexual lives of men and women in Egypt and across the region. The result is an informative, insightful and engaging account of a highly sensitive, and still largely secret, aspect of Arab society.

Sex is entwined in religion and tradition, politics and economics, gender and generations, so it makes the perfect lens for examining the region's complex social landscape. From pregnant virgins to desperate housewives, from fearless activists to religious firebrands, Sex and the Citadel takes a fresh look at the sexual history of the Arab region, and brings new voices to the debate over its future.

Shereen El Feki is a writer, broadcaster, and academic who started her professional life in medical science before going on to become an award-winning journalist with The Economist and a presenter with Al Jazeera English. She is former vice-chair of the UN's Global Commission on HIV and the Law, as well as a TED Global Fellow. Shereen writes for a number of publications, among them the Huffington Post. With roots in Egypt and Wales, Shereen grew up in Canada; she now divides her time between London and Cairo.
