ZAGREB, 7 June 2014 - Badminton, volleyball and football, shish-kebabs, grappa, štrukli and of course drawing - this is how Animafest 2014 guests spent their Friday at the traditional festival picnic, which took place at Medvednica this year. And while Mirai Mizue, Adam Wright and Parissa Mohit were playing ball around Puntijarka, down in Zagreb the festival day began at 11am with the Danish-Swedish film Beyond Beyond at Tuškanac. With this film two 80-year-old animation devotees from the UK, who planned their visit to Animafest two months ago, began their animation marathon. Although they had to drop Grand Panorama 2, which was scheduled at the same time at Cineplexx, they managed to see Norman McLaren's classics at Europa - this great Scottish master's unique 100th birthday celebration marked with painstakingly prepared copies of his best films.

Those who attended Visual Music book presentation on Thursday also afforded a synesthetic experience with a namesake film programme that blended with McLaren to form a three-hour abstract animation meditation. The central event was Adam Wright's overview of the brilliant animatronics career and his collaborations with Tim Burton, Lady Gaga, Hussein Chalayan, Vin Burnham, companies Disney, Warner Brothers and Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

The focus of the schedule at Cineplexx was on student films and their authors, among which is the future winner of the 2014 Dušan Vukotić Award. Music videos, commercials and other commissioned films followed, as well as Grand Competition 5. Tuškanac hosted the audience longing for a dose of nostalgia, with the Croatian Animated Film 1964-65, followed by ParaNorman, Prometheus' Garden and The Pied Piper of Hamelin.

All of Animafest's exhibitions were open today too. After the fierce Animafest Jam Session on Thursday, everyone enjoyed a lighter jazz evening opposite Elvis Penava, Joe Kaplowitz, Davor Križić and Kruno Levačić.

Saturday at Animafest: excitement reaching the peak with the festival award ceremony
To the filmmakers competing for the awards at Animafest 2014 the only escape from the official award ceremony excitement will come in the form of film programmes continuing on Saturday, the day when our festival is flooded with all those who were unable to attend it during the busy week. How Croatian production measures with the international one can be seen at 1pm at Europa thanks to the selections Croatian Puppet Film and Croatian Panorama, one after the other. At 5.30pm another chance to see Hidden Treasures is scheduled. The only thing left between this and the award ceremony at 10 pm is Grand Competition 5.
