Street photographer Vivian Maier is considered to be one of the most important contemporary American photographers. Over the course of five decades, Maier anonymously shot over 100,000 photographs, all while working as a housekeeper. Born in 1926 in New York to a French family, she spent her childhood in the countryside of France, where she took her first photographs using a Kodak Brownie camera. From age 25 onward, she spent her life working as a nanny and street photographer in Chicago and New York, staying anonymous up until her death.
In 2007, historian John Maloof found a gigantic heap of Maier's photographs. Thanks to Maloof, her photographs were published posthumously in American, Italian, Argentine, and British magazines. Maier is now recognizes as an accomplished photographer, her secret identity brought to light.
The documentary Finding Vivian Maier depicts the renowned artist and the search to discover her history. Its UCCA Premiere screening marks the film's debut in mainland China.
