The history of the Frankfurt School Introduction and Discussion

法兰克福学派史报告与讨论

Ever since the Chinese economic reform in the early 1980s, the theories of the Frankfurt School have received considerable attention in China. Scholars and intellectuals have been using them as tools to analyse and critically reflect on the repercussions of reform policy and social change.

Recently, however, it seems that in the West, a new young generation is rethinking and refining critical theory. To mark the release in Chinese of the translated publication "Geschichte der Frankfurter Schule" (The History of the Frankfurt School), which was realised with the support of the Goethe-Institut China, the author Emil Walter-Busch, a student of Adorno, will come to China. In a series of talks, he will introduce the current Western perspective on critical theory and engage in a dialogue with his Chinese colleagues.

Emil Walter-Busch was born in 1942 and studied sociology, philosophy and history at the universities of Zurich, Tübingen, Berlin and Frankfurt. In 1969, he did his doctorate under the supervision of Theodor W. Adorno and Jürgen Habermas. From 1974 onwards, he taught at several Swiss universities. Since October 2007, Walter-Busch has been retired.

The book "Geschichte der Frankfurter Schule", which was published in 2010, provides a concise introduction to the history of the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research and its approach to critical social research. It is "an illuminating, succinct account of the creation of the institute, its time in exile, the gradual adoption of American methods of social research and the discords and splitting up of critical theory".
