The story of Orpheus and Eurydice, one of the most affecting myths in history, poses existential questions about becoming, dying and hope. Romeo Castellucci recounts the ancient myth of the soul's passage through the realm of shadows as an allegorical journey. Set in the demystified province of medicine, he examines the Orphic concept for its contemporary valence: are not perhaps our clinics with their intensive care units and wards for the comatose current-day gates to the realm of shadows?

Romeo Castellucci's theatre is a theatre of truthfulness, whose suggestive images constantly defy all efforts at rationality and instead penetrate deeply into the unconscious.

The theatre is not only a form of antagonism between two characters onstage. Rather, theatre also takes place between the stage and the spectator. The power of Greek tragedy does not lie in the way in which it shows a tragic story; it is the gaze per se that makes all things appear tragic, the gaze that turns tragic itself.

Romeo Castellucci directs Orpheus and Eurydice as a diptych: at Wiener Festwochen, he will present Christoph Willibald Gluck's Italian version from 1762, while the Brussels Opera will feature Hector Berlioz' French interpretation from 1859.

Thematic guided tours of Kunsthistorisches Museum and Wiener Festwochen
In co-operation with Wiener Festwochen, KHM offers guided tours of the Museum's picture gallery that will tie in with Così fan tutte and Orfeo ed Euridice and present interesting particulars about the periods in which the two works were created as well as about corresponding visual artworks.

Orfeo ed Euridice
This guided tour begins with a portrait of Christoph Willibald Gluck since, in addition to showing us his likeness, this painting also, rather wonderfully, pictures the power of music. The lute player accompanies the transmigration of souls, a path also imposed on Ganymede, as depicted by Correggio. And what about Lot's wife, who looked back as well, to disastrous results? However, nobody would want you to turn into a pillar of salt during our pleasurable and association-steeped walk through the Museum's picture gallery!
