Sew & Soul Poster

One's foremost yearning is to have a space to call one's own. After the legislation of the Body Attachment Law, there is a rush on the Body Matching Centre as people who are of age want to apply for pairing based on height, weight, skin colour, age and metabolic rate in order to have their bodies sewn onto another. It is generally believed that "no one is an integral whole; it is only through merging with another body and undergoing a long and repeated process of delight, heartbreak, merging and disputes that one can enjoy the ultimate fulfilment as a whole."

With the number of body attachment cases on the rise, the economy is on the rebound, and the unemployment rate slashed. Doctors advise that "The younger one is to undergo the attachment operation, the smoother the way ahead it would be for the life thereafter." They also warn that "Those who have undertaken the operation should not harbour negative feelings, because if they want to separate, they will have to pay a heavy price."

Some rush to have their body-sewing operation in order to sync with the larger scheme of things; others are doing all they can to break away from body attachment, even at the cost of their lives.

Sew & Soul is an allegory that was originally written by Hon Lai-chu. Theatre Ronin brings out the tragi-comic phenomena of contemporary society with an image-rich staging. When our cities have become one, will a world of attached people be far away?

What is most painful is not having a space to call one's own, but being trapped together in one place.

The company is dedicated to creating theatre productions imbued with local cultural characteristics and inspired by Hong Kong literature. Its repertory includes Memorandum: 10 years. Han. Xiao, The Mariana Trench (with 3rd run in Beijing in 2013, premiere and a re-run in Hong Kong), Legend of the Ocean: La La & the Litter Castle, P.E. Period 2.0, My P.E. Period, Landscape in the Mist (premiered in Hong Kong and a re-run in Beijing in 2012), Searching for Da Vinci, Wilderness of Soul and To Be Continued.

Always sharpening its theatrical "sword", Theatre Ronin roams freely on stage with its wildly romantic imagination, presenting scenes of humanity and freezing them in time so as to preserve whatever beauty that remains in this world at a time when ‘aura’ is fading fast.
