2014 is a busy year for BeijingDance/LDTX. Besides producing four new works and presenting the third edition of Beijing Dance Festival, the Company is looking forward to a successful touring performance between April 8th and 20th. LDTX is invited the first time to Costa Rica International Arts Festival in San Jose, Costa Rica, and the fifth time to Dance Salad Festival in Houston, USA.  This overseas tour will feature three works: Standing before Darkness choreographed by Company's Resident Artist SANG Ji-jia, Sorrowful Song and Treading on Grass (excerpt) choreographed by Executive Artistic Director, LI Han-zhong, and Company's veteran dancer MA Bo. In order to celebrate the year of the horse, LDTX is presenting a sneak preview of this performance on April 4th and 5th at 7:30pm in the LDTX Theatre. See you there.

How much can we know about those around us?Standing Before Darkness is the second work created for BeijingDance / LDTX by the company's resident choreographer, SANG Ji-Jia. This work demonstrates SANG Ji-Jia's unique style in which he ruminates on the capacity of dancers' bodies and combines their technical and pedestrian movements to evoke extreme psychological tension. The performance is accompanied by live electronic music composed by accomplished Hong Kong musician, Dickson DEE.

Sorrowful Song, choreographed jointly by LDTX's executive artistic director LI Han-Zhong and dancer/choreographer MA Bo. Drawing inspiration from and paying tribute to the music of the Polish composer Henryk GORECKI, the work moves with the solemn sound of GORECKI's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, and contemplates the inevitability of tragic situation in human life.

LI HAN-ZHONG
Executive Artistic Director / Choreographer, A native of Yunnan (China), LI Han-zhong graduated with a BA degree from the Division of Chinese Ethnic Dance at the Beijing Dance Academy in 1991. Upon graduation, he joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company where he performed as a dancer, and served as an artistic assistant and choreographer. He was invited by Willy TSAO to be the Deputy Artistic Director for the Beijing Modern Dance Company in March 1999. In September 2005, he set up BeijingDance/LDTX together with Willy TSAO, and has been the company's executive artistic director since. He toured with the company to the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Korea, Singapore, and the Australia, and has been invited by many international dance institutions as guest choreographer, including the Center for the Arts, Adelaide (1998 and 2000), Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Taiwan (1999), and the American Dance Festival's International Choreographers Showcase (1999). His major choreographic works include Sound of Heaven, All River Red, Undetermined Domain; Rear Light, Cold Dagger, First Ritual and Sorrowful Song, etc.

MA BO
Choreographer /Assistant to Artistic Director / Dancer, Born in Mizhi, Shanxi Province, MA Bo graduated with a BA degree from the Beijing Dance Academy, division of Chinese Ethnic Dance in 1991 and became a faculty member at the Beijing Dance Academy. She joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in 1993, and Beijing Modern Dance Company in 1999 and became one of the founding members of the BeijingDance/LDTX in 2005. MA Bo is known for her creative energy; her own choreography includes Variation of Red, Garden of Memory and others. Since 1994, MA Bo and LI Han-zhong, have worked together as partners in choreography, and produced works such as Undetermined Domain, All River Red, Rear Light, The Cold Dagger and others.

 SANG JI-JIA

SANG JI-JIA
Artist-in-Residence / Choreographer
An ethnic Tibetan born in Gansu Province, SANG Ji-jia had been a dancer with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company from 1993 to 1998. He won various awards at international dance competitions including the gold medal at the Paris International Modern Dance Competition in 1996. SANG was named "Star across the Century" by the Guangdong Province in 1997. He was awarded the Asian Cultural Council Scholarship and the American Dance Festival Scholarship in 1998. He joined Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company in December 1999. In 2002, under the auspices of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative Program, SANG studied choreography under William FORSYTHE and stayed with the Forsythe Company as choreographer and dancer until 2006.

SANG Ji-jia returned to China in 2007 and became the Resident Artist of BeijingDance/LDTX. SANG's works have been presented around the world such as at Chang Mu Dance Festival (Korea), Taipei Arts Festival, International Computer Music Festival (Hong Kong), Manila Art Festival (Phillipines), Singapore Art Festival, Adelaide Art Festival (Australia), Montreal Art Festival, Brussels Art Festival, Pina Bausch Art Festival, the Kennedy Center Art Festival (US)., Fall For Dance (US), Holland Dance Festival, St. Paul Art Festival, Wiesbaden International May Festival (Germany), Chinese Arts Festival (Italy) and Swiss International Dance Festival. His major works include 1979, As if to nothing, Not here/Not ever, Layer Code, Comrades, Unspeakable, Sticks, Standing Before Darkness, Sway, etc.

 

BeijingDance/LDTX
The founding of BeijingDance/LDTX (Lei Dong Tian Xia; literally translated as Thunder Rumbles under Heaven) in September of 2005 not only caught widespread international attention, but also captured the imagination of many artists in China. BeijingDance/LDTX was born out of a controversial and exciting time of rapid cultural change in China, becoming China's first non-governmental and independent professional dance company.

Founded by veteran choreographers and a new generation of dancers in China, BeijingDance/LDTX is a platform for contemporary creations. Under the artistic direction of Willy TSAO, China's foremost figure in modern dance, and deputy artistic director LI Han-zhong, the company boasts an ensemble of 14 technically exquisite dancers as well as a diverse repertoire.
