Monica Huggett & The Italian Baroque

One of the most eminent baroque violinists of our time Monica Huggett, will lead the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in a sumptuous evening of Italian Baroque works for string orchestra and solo violin by VIvaldi, Locatelli, Pugnani and Tuma. The programme includes Locatelli's Introduzione Teatrale and Lamento, Pugnani's String Symphony in B-flat major and Tuma's Partita for chamber orchestra. Monica Hugget appears as both soloist and orchestra leader in Vivaldi's highly virtuosic concerto for violin entitled "Il Grosso Mogul". The programme will also showcase mandolin soloists Graham Preskett and Richard Harvey in a performance of Vivaldi's exceedingly popular solo and double mandolin concertos.

Praised by The Strad Magazine for her "intelligent, stylish and expressive playing", Monica Huggett has been at the forefront of the early music revival in London and Europe since the 1960's. She is currently living in New York where she became the first-appointed Artistic Director of the Juilliard School of Music Historical Performance Department several years ago. Monica Huggett also serves as Artistic Director of the Irish Baroque Orchestra, and the Portland Baroque Orchestra in Oregon. In the intervening four decades, she co-founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra with Ton Koopman; founded her own London-based ensemble Sonnerie; performed with Christopher Hogwood at the Academy of Ancient Music and also with Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert.

Graham Preskett has appeared as a mandolin soloist with the London Mozart Players and in duo with guitarists John Williams, Craig Ogden and Richard Harvey. He is also one of the three mandolinists who performed on the soundtrack to the movie 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. In concert he has performed with Deep Purple at the Royal Albert Hall and in the recording studio with artists such as Van Morrison and Cher. In 2011 he conducted the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and played Irish fiddle alongside Davy Spillane at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.

Born in Britain Richard Harvey is renowned worldwide as a dazzling performer on an extraordinary range of instruments, as a conductor and also as a composer of classical works and many scores for the stage and the screen. He has played the mandolin as part of a 30-year touring duo with classical guitarist John Williams. He has also been the featured mandolin soloist with many fine ensembles including the London Vivaldi Orchestra.

*Monica Huggett will also be giving a masterclass for Baroque violin, historical instruments or early music ensembles on Friday 17 January 2014 from 17:00 to 19:30 at CR2, 7/F Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall Backstage.
