The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) today (18 November 2013) announced that Freespace Fest is set to return on 14 and 15 December 2013, which will provide the perfect airy enclave for artists, art enthusiasts and families to unite for an exhilarating weekend, breaking the boundaries and exploring the endless possibilities of performing arts.

Freespace Fest 2013 is a free, two-day outdoor arts festival with an abundance of talents, an explosion of colours, which makes arts accessible to a broad audience from all walks of life. Ten co-curators together with over 400 local and overseas artist units will present 15 hours of wonders covering music, dance, literature, media art, parkour, workshops, talks and open-call programmes at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade.

"This year, the Fest promises to be bigger with many happenings taking place simultaneously. We emphasize interactivity and audience involvement so everyone is free to bring their activities and create their own ideas of what 'Freespace' means," said Mr Louis Yu, WKCDA's Executive Director, Performing Arts.

"Freespace Fest 2013 is an exciting collaborative effort among 10 co-curators, all participating artists and WKCDA to demonstrate the impact of arts in our public spaces, as well as enhancing the public's experience and appreciation of outdoor performance."

There is plenty for music lovers to choose from over that weekend. Yuen Chi-chung and Chang Tieh-chih co-curating this year's music stage will bring a potpourri of music genres covering indie, rock, pop, electronic and country folk, which are guaranteed to set your fingers tapping and your feet dancing. Off the stage, Lawnmap's popular Grassfest will complete the Fest with a strong touch of local young talents and public presence. Samson Young@Electric Company will lead a unique 'orchestra' of laptop computers to take the public through a revolutionary journey of audio-visual computer music. It will also allow the audience to take part in music-making through their smartphones.

Located near the west entrance of the arts hub, a temporary multi-functional compound will house a series of parkour performances and street dance battles. Parkour is gradually becoming a trend in Hong Kong since Luc Besson's 'Yamakasi', in which practitioners (traceur) quickly and efficiently overcome obstacles in their environment. One of the world's leading traceur, Daniel Ilabaca, will offer master classes to local practitioners. The Hong Kong Parkour Association will work their wonders at Freespace Fest with free introductory workshops for the public to experience the power of this exciting art, while Hongboy@Rhythm Attack will continue to spread his street dance charm from the local box-office hit 'The Way We Dance'.

On the international front, Virginia Hyam will surprise the audience with spectacular outdoor workshops and performances such as contemporary circus by Strut n Fret, Parkour by Superfly Monkey Dragons and alternative film experiences by Forest Fringe. Known for its multimedia productions blending contemporary and innovative performing arts, All Theatre Art Association will explore the concept of freedom with three fun and imaginative productions, inspired by Hong Kong's historic, iconic and quirky character.

This year, cultural critic Tang Siu Wa@Workshop for the House of Hong Kong Literature will bring literature into Freespace Fest in various ways, including reading clubs, Cantonese poetry-music jam and interactive literature games, which will be hosted by famous novelists, poets and independent musicians. MaD, Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture will continue their experimental project "Construction in Progress" with two programmes - "Open Space" and "$0 Square Feet Magic Carpets", offering collaborative activities or creative product sale opportunities.

"Freespace fest is a FREE event. Not only because it is free of charge, but also for its free spirit," said Mr Yu. "Come join us and explore what 'Freespace Fest' feels like, what it means to you and what you can do with it."
