Considered by some critics to be Satyajit Ray's masterpiece, The Lonely Wife represents the celebrated auteur at the height of his powers. Based on the novella "Nastanirh" by Rabindranath Tagore, and set in the late 1800s, the film concerns Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee), a housewife whose affluent lifestyle is marred by loneliness. Too busy with work, her husband Bhupati (Sailen Mukherjee) asks his cousin Amal (Soumitra Chatterjee) to spend time with Charu. But soon their relationship blossoms into something stronger. Ray uses minimal dialogue and a masterful use of film technique to assemble this subtle yet deeply felt drama of unfulfilled longing and resigned frustration. Once cited by Satyajit Ray as his favorite among his own films.
