Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is an Iranian solo percussionist who lives in Berlin. In the course of his career he developed over 30 new striking and finger techniques of Tombak and revolutionized the traditional way of playing. Mortazavi not only uses the Tombak and Daf as rhythmic instruments, but creates pieces of a melancholic concentration supported by harmonies and multi-voiced sound structures, which add an associative structure full of images and narrative dialogues to his compositions.

John Lee is a percussionist from Hong Kong, who studied modern dance and classical piano in his early years. Later he taught himself to play frame drum, as well as various percussion instruments like woodblock, gong, water pan, and Hang. He has collaborated with Tuvan singer Sainkho Namtchylak and Chinese guqin player Wu Na. In recent years, Lee has been exploring playing in nature, and held a series of concerts in Hong Kong’s wetlands, beaches and mountains.

While displaying the universal charm of hand percussion instruments, Lee and Mortazavi will present different music languages and understandings of rhythm.
