LO'JO

LO'JO

LO'JO uses Indian and African tunes to present the public with melodies that are inspired by world music. When listening to this band, we can smell the curry and saffron and feel the red dirt under our bare feet; LO'JO brings us to far-away countries with their entrancing rhythms on the violin, kora, imzad, saxophone and piano.

The mix of influences they encounter on their travels results in a musical style with hints of jazz, reggae, rock, oriental and African sounds. Their latest album "Cinema el Mundo" represents a soundtrack for a trip in the 3rd Millennium.

The Chinese violinist Guo Gan features in several songs on this album, creating a strong link between this masterpiece and China. Guo Gan will accompany LO'JO on their tour through China, an exceptional collaboration. Guo Gan has done a lot to popularize the traditional Chinese instrument the erhu. He has used his elegance and virtuosity to make this instrument better known wherever he goes. He never forgets his identity and culture when presenting the Chinese public with his music that is inspired by his numerous encounters with musicians from all over the world.

LO'JO is a famous world music band and celebrates its thirtieth anniversary with Cinema el Mundo, its thirteenth album. No world music but a world full of images, colours, sound and stories. The latest album of this band makes you travel from the heat of the Sahara desert to the colourful landscapes on Reunion Island. The various sounds and harmonies relate to various landscapes, joy of living and LO'JO is now coming to Beijing on the 21st of June 2013, on the occasion of the Fête de la Musique, to share their incredible energy with the Chinese public.

Guo Gan is a traditional Chinese musician who manages to combine tradition, modernity and intercultural music. He has played with the greatest Western jazz bands in the world. Whether he is playing the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument, as a soloist, like at the Cannes Festival, or as another instrument with a Western jazz band, Guo Gan never forgets his origins and provides us with an opportunity to discover the oriental charm of the erhu, an instrument he has played since he was a little boy.

LO'JO
The band LO'JO formed in 1982 in Angers in the west of France and counts six band members. Every musician has contributed to the style of the band that has become a true world music style. Listening to a Lo'JO album is like exploring the world, enjoying every minute of it. When Denis Péan sings, one could think he is Johnny Cash's brother. Violinist Richard Bourreau's input is his traditional training at the Angers Conservatory; he channels much of the inspiration that comes from all around the world. Bass and double bass player Kham Meslien and drummer Baptiste Brondy are responsible for the mixed rhythms, they wind them up only to let them roam free again. The sisters Nid El Mourid, Yamina and Nadia are wandering singers, travelling all over Europe, crossing the hills in Georgia, the red dirt roads in Mali until the Atlas Mountains. Over the past thirty years, the delicate colours, the fragile shapes and the subtleness of their music have charmed many great musicians and artists of our time, like Robert Plant (singer of Led Zepplin), cellist Vincent Ségal, erhu player GuoGan, and many others.

Guo Gan
Yi-Zhen is his real name, was born in Shenyang in China.Guo Gan comes from a family of musicians and started playing the erhu at a very young age (he started performing at four years old).  He was taught by his father, Guo Junming, a famous erhu soloist.

Guo Gan went on to discover Western instruments and learned to play the violin, cello and piano during his years in high school (1981-1987). In that same period, he accompanied his father on tour "Duo for two string-vielle" with more than one hundred concert dates. At that time he was just turning 16 years old.

In 1987 he started studying erhu at the Shenyang Conservatory and graduated in 1991 with honours. His thesis described the violin techniques that are used for the erhu. During this period, he also specialised in Chinese and Western percussions and played a Jazz concert for percussions and piano, a first in the history of the conservatory.

In 2001, Guo Gan decided to go to Paris to broaden his musical talent. He studied jazz percussions at the Fresnes National Music School. In 2002, Composer Gabriel Yared and director Samantha Lang invited him to participate in the recording of the music for the film "The Idol" and he made a guest appearance as a soloist at the opening ceremony of the 55th Cannes Festival. In 2005, Yvan Cassar invited him to play as an erhu soloist for the production of the Symphonic poem "L'Encre de Chine" with the Paris Opera Orchestra, a concert that was performed in one of the greatest French venues, le Palais des Congrès. The same year, the Chinese director Zhang Yimou invited him to play a series of concerts for the promotion of the film "The House of Flying Daggers". The prince of Morocco also invited him for a percussion and erhu concert.
Since then, Guo Gan continues to work with prestigious artists from all over the world, performing in the most renowned concert halls.
