Visual Symphony

'Visual symphony' is the name of an exhibition by Li Chevalier who will echo a concert by the head of the Paris Opera Philippe Jordan, to be held on 3 July 2013 at the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) (Beijing) as part of the Croisements Festival. Li Chevalier's exhibition wonderfully mixes music and visual arts to present a series of pure and imaginative works dedicated to music.

"Cantabile per archi" installation. Crossing boundaries and genres is the order of the day at this exhibition linking music and visual arts, east and west. It's a nod to the artist's career and to his works born from the meeting point between Pacific Asia and Atlantic Europe.

About 200 stringed instruments spread over a space in which they become the body and support for ink paintings, calligraphy and photographs. Columns of light beamed through Mozart's manuscripts light the whole as if in solemn appreciation, the homage of a visual artist to music. 'Cantabile per archi' is inspired by the symphonic work of the same name by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. On the opening day, the Paris Opera soloist Fréderic Laroque will play and improvise on the violin at the heart of the exhibition.

Li Chevalier lives and works between Paris and Beijing. She graduated from the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London and has a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne after studying at Sciences-Po in Paris (1986-1990).

Since 2007, three retrospective Li Chevalier exhibitions have been held at the National Art Museum of China, the Today Art Museum and the Shanghai Art Museum.

Li Chevalier has exhibited in numerous museums and modern art fairs, including the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Carrousel du Louvre, the International Art Fair in London, that of Glasgow, Art en Capital at the Grand Palais, the Wuhan Art Museum, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Beijing Museum of Contemporary Art, the Zhungzheng Gallery in Taiwan, the Sunshine Art Museum, Jin Zhi Jian, Huantie, National Library of China, Al Bida National Gallery of Qatar, Columbia University art gallery in the US etc.

Li Chevalier is known for her experimental painting born of a fusion of western inspiration and elements of Chinese traditional art. Her installations and her personal concept of scenography have guaranteed her a place among the top multimedia artists.

Many of Li Chevalier's works have a title linking them to their inspiration born from the artist's love of music, such as 'Destiny Symphony' (Beethoven), currently being exhibited in the first reception room of the Embassy of France in Beijing, 'Rite of Spring' (Stravinsky), 'Two Voice Inventions' (Bach), 'Violin Concerto' (Sibelius), 'I hear the water dreaming' and 'The Transformed Night'.

A conference will take place on the opening day of the exhibition from 3.30pm to 5pm on the theme of 'Music and Painting: A Passionate Love Affair'.
