Lo'Jo
Lo'Jo presents a world music fusion that has traversed five continents over thirty years. Their last album "Cinema El Mundo" fuses the musical encounters that have fed this long voyage…
The band makes music unlike any already in existence, freely crossing stylistic boundaries. It's kaleidoscopic sound bringing together French chanson, elements of Jazz and sophisticated pop, reggae and dub, circus and cabaret music, klezmer and East European Roma tunes, West African and Maghrebian traditions. And Pean's rough-edged, Tom Waits-like voice contrasts beautifully with those of sisters Yamina and Nadia el Mourid. Cinema El Mundo presents itself as the soundtrack for a sea-voyage which celebrates a sense of multicultural community.
Lo'Jo was founded in 1982 by young poet Denis Péan and violin-playing friend, Richard Bourreau. By the end of the 1980s, they were playing throughout Europe and had appeared in New York as part of an artists' collective. LoJo have never been a band that fit neatly into music industry norms, preferring instead to concentrate their creative and organizational energies on eccentric and challenging events such as The Festival in the Desert, a gathering of Touareg, African and International musicians which takes place annually in the southern Sahara desert. After releasing 10 albums and touring 5 continents, Lo'Jo are considered one of the best live bands in the world.
