Wong Man lei only has three scenes as the titular mad woman in this mystery thriller, but her appearances - including an extended monologue and an explosive outburst in the film's finale - left such an impact on audiences that this has remained one of the most memorable performances of her career. Beyond its creepy atmosphere and shocking moments, the core of Chor Yuen's film is ultimately about dated traditions and superstitions that favour men over women in society. Despite the fear the mad woman evokes, the film is ultimately sympathetic to her plight, as evident by Cheung Wood yau's speech at the end of the film.
