"In Retrospect - An Exhibition of Works by Nan Qi, Cai Guangbin, and Zhang Quan" hosted by G-Dot Art Space and the China Arts Foundation will officially open on 30 March 2013 at G-Dot Art Space in Beijing.

Chinese Ink Painting has conducted a dialogue with Western art on an equal footing, encouraging many Chinese artists to carry out multifaceted experiments and exploration within the medium. The purpose and aim of this exhibition is to enable the viewer to understand the unique effect that the works of Nan Qi, Cai Guangbin, and Zhang Quan, embodied in those on display in this exhibition, have had on contemporary Chinese Ink Painting.

A new branch of two-dimensional Chinese art has its roots in Pop Art. These three artists have taken concepts and techniques from this Western artistic movement and incorporated them into their own works without once losing sight of the unique cultural significance of Ink. In taking inspiration from a past movement, the artists are using retrospection to create something entirely new. Pop Art itself appropriated ideas from the earlier Dada and Surrealist movements, retrospectively adding Duchamp's representations of mundane and ready-made objects to its works.  To paraphrase Derrida, we only value the past when it is placed in the context of the present and, as Chinese Ink Painting moves forward, it completes its historical progression by continually referencing the past.

Based on this and their current and contemporary understanding of Ink, Nan Qi, Cai Guangbin, and Zhang Quan have each developed his own form of expression, using the process of retrospection to draw on a respected oeuvre of thousands of years of Chinese Ink Painting to become the avant-garde of Chinese Contemporary Art.
