RAINER HONECK

was born 1961 in Nenzing, Vorarlberg (Austria) and started learning violin at the age of seven; he studied at the High School of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Prof. Bertschinger and later, with Prof. Alfred Staar. He was awarded First Prize from "Jeunesse Musicale" in Vienna in 1977 and a study grant from the Dr. Karl Bohm Foundation (administered by the Vienna Philharmonic) in 1978.

Rainer Honeck joined the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1981, advancing to the position of concert master in the Opera in 1984, and to that of concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic, as well in 1992.

Rainer Honeck is very active as a soloist, with concert appearances in Austria (e.g., at the music festival in Bregenz) and in Europe (debut at the "Proms" in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1993), Japan and America (1994 debut at the Avery Fisher Hall in New York). Other personal highlights include Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Yomiuri Nippon Orchestra (in the Suntory Hall in Japan) and Dvorak's Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Mariss Jansons in 2000.

Recordings of note of Rainer Honeck's solo work include live recordings of Rimsky Korsakov's "Scheherazade" with the Vienna Philharmonic and Seiji Ozawa in 1993 (Philips) and Richard Strauss' A Hero's Life under the direction of Christian Thielemann in 2002 (Deutsche Grammophon). He has further recorded Dvorak's and Mendelssohn's Violin Concertos with the Czech Philharmonic in Prague (Pony Canyon label), the complete works for violin and piano by Franz Schubert (Pony Canyon) and a Mozart CD including the 3rd and 5th Violin Concertos, the "Sinfonia Concertante" (Tobias Lea, viola) and the "Concertone" (Milan Setena, violin), released in November 2004 for the Austrian National Bank.

Rainer Honeck's intensive work as a chamber musician - founding member and primarius of the "Wiener Virtuosen" from 1989 to 1999, leader of the Vienna String Soloists (1982 -2004) and, since autumn 2000, primarius of the Ensemble Wien - is also well documented in radio, television and CD productions. The last few years have seen him extend his "leading" repertoire to encompass orchestra literature with Rainer Honeck both playing solo and conducting for e.g., with the Nagoya Philharmonic in Japan and the Malmo Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
