Description of the play
In 2019, Robert Icke, Associate Director of the Almeida Theatre in London, directed his own adaptation of Schnitzler’s “Professor Bernhardi”, first published in 1912. Since its first performances, the show was immediately SOLD OUT on a daily basis, and received day after day glowing reviews as well as the highest rating (FIVE STAR★★★★★) from The Guardian and other publications. The following year, in 2020, not only was it nominated for the most prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards “Best New Play” and “Best Actress”, but it also received numerous British theatre awards and still is one of the most talked about plays.
Ruth is a first class doctor and the executive director of a medical research institute. In the wake of a young girl’s death, a whole range of social issues such as religion, gender, and class disparity start to overwhelm Ruth, making her reconsider her role as a doctor.
In this Japan premiere, the play is directed by Tamiya Kuriyama. The main character, Ruth, is played by Shinobu Otake, one of Japan’s most famous and representative Japanese actresses, who has been awarded the 49th Kikuta Kazuo Theater Award for “Piaf” and the 52nd Kinokuniya Theater Award for “Phèdre.
Shinobu Otake, who has been performing relentlessly since her debut and whom Kuriyama places great confidence in, on this occasion plays a top class woman doctor. A power game takes place in her medical institution. This is Otake’s first participation in a modern social drama in a long time, and expectations are high for her performance in this difficult role, where she is in conflict about being a doctor.
The co-stars include talented and popular actors such as Satoshi Hashimoto, Eri Murakawa, Atsushi Hashimoto, Shuto Miyazaki, Rin Nasu, Hana Amano, Chukichi Kubo, Mayumi Myosei, Yoshiko Tokoshima and Toru Masuoka.

本作品は、2019年ロンドンのアルメイダ劇場のアソシエイトディレクターであるロバート・アイクが、1912年に発表されたシュニッツラーの「Professor Bernhardi(ベルンハルディ教授)」を翻案し、自ら台本を手がけて演出。同劇場で開幕するやいなや、連日SOLD OUT、ザ・ガーディアンをはじめ各紙でFIVE STAR★★★★★(最高評価)で絶賛され、翌年2020年には英国で最も権威あるローレンス・オリヴィエ賞「Best New Play(作品賞)」「Best Actress(女優賞)」のノミネートを始め、イギリス演劇賞各賞に輝いた今最も注目の話題作です。
医療研究所の所長でありエリート医師のルース。ある少女の死をきっかけに、宗教・ジェンダー・階級差など、あらゆる社会問題がルースの頭上に降りかかり、医師としての自分を見つめ直していくという物語。
日本初演となる今回、栗山民也を演出に迎え、主人公ルース役には『ピアフ』で第49回菊田一夫演劇賞『フェードル』で第52回 紀伊国屋演劇賞を受賞するなど、名実ともに日本を代表する女優大竹しのぶ。
デビュー以来休むことなく舞台に立ち続け、栗山が絶大な信頼を置く大竹が今回演じるのはエリート医師！とある医療機関で繰り広げられるパワーゲーム。大竹にとっては久しぶりの社会派現代劇で、自らの医師としてのアイデンティティと向き合うこの難役を、いかに演じるのか期待が高まります。
