1924年、夏―――。
アメリカ全土は、数年前に施行された禁酒法の最中にあり、混沌としていた。
そんな中、イリノイ州シカゴで全米が注目する、ある裁判が始まろうとしていた。
裕福な家庭に生まれ育ち、共にエリートと呼ばれたローブとレオポルドが起こした衝撃的な殺人事件。それは当時の世論に「未成年によって行われた犯罪では史上最悪である」と言わしめたほどのものだった。
事件の数年前にシカゴ大学で運命的な出会いを果たした二人は、互いの才能に魅かれ合い信頼関係を深めていた。犯罪小説にのめりこみ空想の中で『完全犯罪』の実行を夢見るようになっていたローブと、愛鳥家でニーチェの『超人主義』に傾倒していたレオポルドは、共謀の末に遂に事件を引き起こす。顔見知りの少年ボビー・フランクスを誘拐し、殺害。身代金目的の誘拐を偽装しようと様々な工作を施すが、それは『完全犯罪』には程遠い、稚拙なものだった。警察の捜査の手が及び、やがて彼らは犯行を自白する。明らかになる驚愕の動機、揺らいでいく二人の信頼関係。
二人の命運を握る名うての弁護士・ダロウは驚きの手法で情状酌量の判決を狙うべく奔走するが、厳格な検事・クロウは彼らに厳罰を下すべく毅然と立ちはだかる。
裁判で暴かれていく二人の秘密の関係、そして下される判決・・・。
犯した罪と向き合った時、二人の心に去来する思いとは―――。

Meanwhile, a trial in Chicago, Illinois, which the United States is paying attention to, is about to begin.
Born and raised in a wealthy family, a shocking murder caused by Robe and Leopold, both called elites. It was as much as public opinion at the time said, “the worst crime ever committed by a minor.”
The two, who had a fateful encounter at the University of Chicago a few years before the incident, were fascinated by each other’s talents and deepened their relationship of trust. Robe, who was absorbed in a crime novel and dreamed of committing a “perfect crime” in his fantasy, and Leopold, who was a bird lover and devoted to Nietzsche’s “superhumanism”, finally caused an incident after a collusion. ..
