Debussy (1862-1918) planned to compose six sonatas in his later years, but his cancer progressed and his third work, the Violin Sonata, was to be the last in a series of sonatas as well as his entire creation. The compositions were written between 1916 and 1917 during the First World War. Gaston Poulet provided technical advice on the violin during the composition, and on 5 May of the year of its completion, the work was premiered at the Salle Gaveau in Paris with Gaston Poulet on violin and Debussy himself at the piano. This was the last time Debussy appeared in public. The piece was dedicated to his wife Emma.
The whole consists of three movements and is based on the key of G minor. It adopts the same cyclic form as the Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, which was written earlier. The fact that the sixth sonata, which was conceived after this one, was dedicated to Bach, also shows his attitude towards classical chant. On the other hand, he succeeds in bringing out the rich expression of his later years, with a deep sense of shadow and fragile fantasy characteristic of him, mixed with a haunting, wild beat reminiscent of Roma violins.
The first movement opens with a weak note that creates a fantastic and sad emotion, before building up to an intense and passionate climax. After a succession of strong, sharp and intense music, which changes in intensity one after the other, we move on to the relaxed middle section. The sweet, extended violin melody and the tense, fast-changing music are very attractive.
